Week 4 : Onwards and upwards!

Photo du rédacteur: CatherineCatherine

Before we go any further, here's a handy recap-map of where we've been so far...

Week 4 was "Sweden" week.

Sweden: Crispbread as big as YOUR FACE

What really struck us about Sweden was just how much life revolves around being outdoors. Every campsite we stayed at had one or more fire pits, and there are signposted swimming spots everywhere there's an accessible body of water.

Optimism vs. realism

This week's destinations included:

  • Gävle : because it was in a convenient location and has a Catholic church (not the easiest thing to find in Sweden). The campsite was fine. We were the only people in a tent, which is becoming a bit of a theme.

  • Nordmaling : for proximity to Umea, where Damien once applied for a job. Umea itself is nice enough but we're glad we don't live this far north. Also: so. many. mosquitoes.

Bonus points to the campsite for the free washing machine!!!!!

Umea ice cream. Excellent.

  • Vallen, Lulea : this is where things started feeling properly "foreign". We took a secondary road to the campsite and it was... interesting. More to the point, this is where we found our first blueberries. SO many blueberries. The campsite was our favourite yet. It's run by volunteers (three old ladies and a much younger man who appears to have been roped in for the summer by his grandmother), in and around a former children's holiday home. It's on a lake and the café serves excellent Swedish waffles.

Once again, the children captured a frog. It was a big one this time.
