Playing catchup: Riga

Photo du rédacteur: CatherineCatherine

Now we're finally on the move again, it's about time I caught you all up on where we've been...

If I remember rightly, the last post was from Tallinn, which brings us on to Riga.

First, a handy tip: if you can’t remember where Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are on a map, just remember that they go in alphabetical order from north to south.

You’re welcome.

After Estonia, then, we headed south into Latvia. Things we noticed on the way include the fact that fuel seems to be the same price everywhere in Estonia (government regulation? Anyway, we think it’s a good idea), and an entirely new approach to overtaking. Want to get past the car in front, but there’s something coming the other way? Just accelerate and do it anyway. The other cars will move over to the side to let you past. (Do NOT try this at home).

We had some misgivings about Riga before we arrived, based on an assumption that it would be a lot like Tallinn. Fortunately, we were wrong, and it turned out to be one of our favourite places to date. Given that our hostel was decidedly dodgy, parking was nigh-on impossible and there was a miked-up string quartet just down the road playing rock song covers until 11pm every night, that’s saying a LOT.

Highlights included :

- a large pedestrian area and a big central park (important when travelling with free-range children)

- a Corgi flash mob on the day we arrived : over 100 Corgis and their owners walking from the Latvian Freedom Monument to the British embassy in memory of Queen Elizabeth II (surreal)

- a workers’ canteen-style restaurant with excellent food, where we all ate more than our fill for less than €5/person

- comparing favourite theologians with a Spanish seminarian (yes, we’re nerds)

- cheap coffee

- the huge covered market (much better than the one in Tallinn)

There was baby octopus!
There was baby octopus!

- sitting on the pavement in the Art Nouveau quarter for a drawing lesson

- a late-night game of loup touche-touche in the city centre, during which we may or may not have startled a group of Chinese tourists.

Oh, and a bronze armadillo outside the cathedral, because WHY NOT.

Cela fait un bon moment que nous n'avons pas donné de nouvelles. Je rattraperai les semaines manquantes à un autre moment, mais pour...
